Construction began in June 1942 and the first train crossed the 3,360 ft. long bridge connecting B&O's Alexandria branch with Potomac Yard in Alexandria in November 1942. During three years of service one train a day was required to cross the span to maintain safety. The bridge averaged three to seven trains daily with amaximum of 184 total trains in October 1944.
