Taken in 1906-1907, this was the up-track view from the old B&O station. In effect the main line of the old B&O is almost on top of WMATA's REd Line today. The west side of Union Station stands ready for operation. Photo from Lee Rogers Collection.

For more then 18 months the station was in operation without direct street railway connection. The placement of the trackage for the two biggest street railway companies required major work in Columbus Plaza (Circle). It took several months for the companies to come to terms with the cost-split of maintenance and liability on the track layout. Photo from Lee Rogers Collection.

Significance: This steam power plant was torn down to make way for the Washington "Metro" subway system. It was originally constructed to provide heat and electric power for Union Station, and compressed air for the track switches. The power plant was a representative example of an early 20th century power plant built for municipal railroad usage.
